Match Play 101

On the eve of the HSBC World Match Play event at Wentworth, it may be useful for all of us to brush up on our match-play strategy. Since we've all been watching/playing stroke-play for the past year, a match-play refresher should help to, at the least, put us in the right mind-frame as the HSBC leads into the Ryder Cup.

My competitive golf experience is mostly limited to stroke-play events. It wasn't until I played in the 2006 San Francisco Championship that I was completely immersed in the intricate form of match-play competition. An "I-can-wing-it-novice", I proceeded to take a match that I had made dormie on 16 and give up the match on the 19th hole. It was a hard mistake to swallow and I'll never make that mistake again. Don't make the same mistake I did. Take Match-Play 101 before, not after, your next match.

BBC Sport provides the crash course, featuring the advice of Gary Player, Peter Alliss, Sandy Lyle, Laura Davies, Phil Price, and Jim Gallagher.
