Week In Review- Week 39

Looking back at Week 39, I can't help but think about the oncoming "four-oh". Forty, over the hill, and everything gets easier from there. Time flies when you're having fun.

New GPS devices keep flooding the market. At least with SkyKap, you're less likely to loose your new gadget. How well it functions is yet to be decided.

Phil's preparing his strategy for Augusta and he's planning on bringing another double dose of titanium to the show. For those stuck in the snow, daydreaming about golf might be the only way to fend off the cabin fever.

Stay tuned and keep that bag fresh!

Let's Get Plowed

As the West Coast Swing comes to an end and I watch the sun shine over San Francisco, I can't help but think about the difficult weather the rest of the country is experiencing. It seems like there is a lot of talk about global warming these days, including the recent  Nobel Prize nomination of Al Gore for his many efforts to increase environmental awareness. We all hear about the preventative efforts we can make, but what do we do about the weather we encounter today?

If you're a house-locked golfer with some time on your hands, you get creative. To deal with the snow, a man in Pennsylvania has converted his golf cart into a snow plow and has added a remote control so he can clear his driveway from his living room. Combine that with a tasty beverage and he can have a productive and entertaining afternoon.

I'm assuming it's an electric golf cart, which provides some environmental sensitivity.

Two's Better Than One...Again...

I'm watching the Nissan Open and just watched a video montage of Phil commenting on his driving and how it is the best it has ever been. Standing on every tee, he feels confident that he will hit it in the fairway. Come to think of it, driving the ball will be an integral part of  his, and everyone's, play at the Master's this year.

On Thursday, The Scotsman.com reported a conversation with Phil and his intention to use two drivers at Augusta this year. Gourmet Golf reported on another attempt at twin driver strategy here.

"Speaking from California on an international conference call organized by Augusta National, Mickelson expects to leave the sand-wedge out of his bag and pursue a similar strategy to the one which defeated Tim Clark by two shots and Tiger Woods by three a year ago."

With so many new Callaway drivers on the market, it will be interesting to see if Phil plays two identical drivers with different weighting, or if he'll utilize both the FT5 and FTi. There he goes again. Phil just hit another fairway.

If You Ever Lose Your Head On The Golf Course...

GPS ubiquity is upon us. Hand-held devices, cars, shoes, and now golf hats can provide us with precise location and distance. These gadgets are supposed to make our lives easier and more efficient, but will our rounds of golf really get shorter and will our scores actually go down?

SkyKap is a new provider of GPS enabled golf accessories, incorporating GPS technology into the bill of your hat. In addition, the hats include a small scale computer design and voice recognition to acquire yardage data, enter and track scores, pace of play timing functions and many other capabilities.

Similar to SkyCaddie, courses can be searched and downloaded to the hat by using the course access website and hooking the hat to a  PC with the supplied USB cable. In addition, the hat can record a course layout (green distances only) which can then be shared with other users.

Too bad the hat can't predict the weather. Hopefully it doesn't rain during your round of golf, or else you may really lose your head on the golf course.

Week In Review- Week 38

Here we go again. Last week was quiet, except for some noise on eBay and some noise from Danny Ganz.

The new Phil is looking good

Stay tuned and keep that bag fresh!

Me First And The Gimme Gimmes

In a marketing ploy that appears to be an attempt to beat the golf contraband that inevitably gets leaked to the public, Grafalloy has employed the services of Ebay to promote the new Epic shaft. The Ebay auction is for the first production Epic shaft (68 gram S-Flex, 46-inch driver shaft in a 0.335-inch tip) with a certificate of authenticity from Graffaloy. There's only four days left so hurry up and place your bid.

The Epic golf shaft, to be released in mid-March, is constructed from a revolutionary nanofuse material that provides an alternative to steel and graphite shafts. The physical properties of the material allows engineers to produce a shaft that is as light as graphite, but with similar properties and feel as steel. The guys at Bomb & Gouge say "It was just dandy. And if it makes any sense, it didn't feel like graphite or steel."

A previous entrant into the nanotech golf shaft market, Accuflex's Creation, was also profiled here at Gourmet Golf.

"Everything about Epic is one-of-a-kind, so this is a fun way to create additional excitement around the shaft and give one person a unique opportunity," states Chad Hall, director of marketing. "I can't wait until the bidding begins."

Of course, Golfwrx has coverage, comments, and pics of Tiger testing the shaft at Torrey Pines.

Week In Review- Week 37

Week in review? Nah.... This time, let's look forward.

Now that Peyton won his Super Bowl, you think he might make an appearance at the AT&T? What if he was paired with Tom Brady? That would be worth the price of admission. Anyone heading out to the Monterey Peninsula? It's been beautiful in the Bay Area. Congrats to the Colts. It must feel good.

Golfers in the Bay are gearing up for the San Francisco Championship. Can Will Johnson, Ryan Kuss, and Diane Kwon defend their titles? Not if I have anything to say about it. My tee time is 7am this Saturday and we're expecting record galleries. Wink

Stay tuned and keep that bag fresh!
